We congratulate Nizhoni her accomplishments and her reward of the Udall Scholarship. Here is Nizhoni’s background and goals of which will be supported by the Udall Scholarship.

“Nizhoni is an enrolled citizen of the Navajo Nation and studies biomedical sciences with minors in chemistry and Indigenous studies at Colorado State University. She currently serves her local Native community at CSU as a tutor, a peer mentor to first-year Native students, and the student coordinator for Native Women’s Circle. This summer, she will be conducting microbiology research by examining the impact of uranium mining on Navajo Nation soil. After graduation, Nizhoni plans to continue serving her communities as a physician and researcher focusing on creating access and change within Indigenous communities.”

As a Native woman in science, I hope to develop consensus among Indigenous and Western perspectives to achieve my career goals and make meaningful, significant changes in health care, research and education to centralize Indigenous equity.
